Your Chapter Needs You!

Contribute to the Pittsburgh Chapter, increase your professional network and get to know others involved in your profession. PMPs can earn valuable PDU’s in addition to making a contribution to the Project Management profession!  Volunteers and Operational Team members earn up to 5 PDUs per year and elected officers earn up to 10 PDUs a Year.

There are two different general categories of volunteer opportunities: Special Event and Operational Team.  Special Event opportunities usually involve one-time activities like Project Management events.  Operational Team opportunities involve assisting the operational teams with various efforts that will aid the organization to strategically reach its growth and service goals.

Special Event Volunteer Opportunities

Professional Development Day - Nov 6, 2013 at EWSP

We are looking for volunteers to serve on one of our four sub-committees (described below).   

Subcommittee Description of Roles and Responsibilities
Planning Sub-Committee - Administration
-Secures the conference location (tentatively complete)
-Creates request for the seating arrangements
-Prepares PDU details for the PDD event sessions
-Handles conference room and virtual class setup activities - podium, microphone, projector, laptops, presentation loading and back-up in thumb drive, dial-in phone numbers
-Handles registration process and activities
-Handles attendance process for the participants
-Handles give-away for participants
-Prepares participation certification and distributes to participants
Planning Sub-Committee - Communications
-Handles communication content preparation, review, approval and delivery: PDD announcement, PDD registration, PDD reminder, PDD poster, and PDD signboard
-Sends thank you e-mail to the speakers and participation after the PDD event day
-Prepares, reviews, approves, distributes, and cosolidates results of post-event survey content
Planning Sub-Committee - Sponsors
-Identifies and secures primary and secondary sponsors for the event
-Acts as reach-out organization to get sponsorship on various symposium needs
Planning Sub-Committee - Speakers
-Finalizes the topics and secures the Speakers
-Follows up Speakers no later than one week prior to event on: Short biography, presentation copy, and additional handout details, if any
-Reviews and finalizes the presentation material within PDD planning committee
-Coordinates with administration sub-committee to load the presentation into the laptops
-Makes arrangements for badges and security access for the Speakers
-Handles follow-up calls and reminders to the Speakers one day prior to the event
-Meets and greets the Speakers and accompanies them to the PDD event location
-Accompanies the Speakers to the lobby after their session is over
-Handles follow-up thank you calls to the Speakers
-Shares the PDD participant survey feedback with the Speakers

Anniversary Event PM

Events Manager

Outgoing, energetic volunteer required to assist with speaker coordination and event logistics for PMI Pittsburgh program events.  Develop and maintain a list of candidate speakers and session topics.  Engage and screen potential speakers, coordinate with outreach volunteers, validate event details and logistics.  Coordinate with LIG Directors and teams to ensure events are scheduled 3 or more months in advance.  Coordinate chapter meeting events to be scheduled 6 or more months in advance.  Assist VP Programs with event planning and balance of content for program year.  For more information on this position, please contact the VP of Programs at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Outreach Team

Director of Community Outreach

  • Reports to the VP of Outreach
  • Attends monthly committee meetings to provide update on volunteer opportunities with charitable and community organizations
  • Identify and act as a liaison between the chapter and charitable organizations in the Pittsburgh area
  • Works to use our strengths in project management to give back to the community by assisting charitable organizations in planning events
  • Identifies venues for chapter members to give back to the local community as a group through volunteering and charity events
  • Assign a Community Consultant for each community organization event and collect monthly updates
  • Maintain a permanent file of Community Consultants, process documents, and activity summaries
  • Effort required varies between 5-10 hours per month. 1 PDU gained per hour of effort

Company Coordinators (up to 2 per company; one for each member company and a backup)

  • Appointed position
  • Reports to the Director of Corporate Outreach
  • Determine their company's needs and work with the Director of Corporate Outreach to determine how the Chapter can best help fulfill those needs.  These representatives comprise the membership of the Coproate Outreach team and represent their member companies (for each member company).
  • Understand their company, its project service maturity level, its management direction, and how best the Chapter can fit in to add value and not compromise internal corporate goals or vision
  • Communicate with comapny project managers, whether PMP certified or not, to accomplish goals above (through an initial brainstorming kickoff introduction and then informally or formally as required).  Results are reported at monthly committee meetings and transformed by the outreach Coordinators into events.
  • Share communications from Chapter and event notifications with colleagues to raise awareness of Chapter events, opportunities and benefits

Relationship Managers (1 per organization)

  • Appointed position
  • Reports to the Director of Professional Organization Outreach
  • Fosters mutually beneficial relationship with assigned professional organization on a monthly basis and provides updates to Director of Professional Organization Outreach
  • Leads the development and implementation of programs, trainings, and events that increase the awareness of our Chapter and the profession of project management, while benefiting the professional organization
  • Seeks out professional development opportunities for our members through the assigned professional organization
  • Documents each event in an activity summary and provides to Director of Professional Organization Outreach and VP of Outreach
  • Time Committment: Approximately 1 hour/month
  • Specifically need RMs to work with: International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) and International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE)

PA eMentoring

Think back to when you were in High School and ask yourself, "Knowing all that I know now, what guidance about college and careers do I wish I had gotten as a high school student?"

  • PA eMentoring is a chance to give that guidance to a high school student who, below the surface, is just as nervous and scared as you were.
  • The ultimate goal of PA eMentoring is to help kids achieve success after high school by providing them with a detailed, realistic post secondary plan that is created with and supported by a career mentor.

  • Worth 5 PDUs under mentorship category.

Professional Mentors

Engineers without Borders (University of Pittsburgh Chapter) is looking for professional mentors with experience in a water treatment/water filtration project in Tapagem, Brazil. Responsibilities of this mentor would be to:

  • Meet with EWB  every few weeks and verify their designs, providing input and advice where necessary
  • Approve/Sign-Off on all Designs
  • The group requires that a prospective professional mentor have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the related field and a PE license (state not specified)
  • In addition, opportunities also exist for supporting mentors (a reduced role compared to the "Main" mentor) who have interest in assisting this group with their project
  • For their efforts, mentors to this group will earn 1 PDU per hour volunteered per PMI's PMP Handbook

Director of Membership Communications

  • Volunteers needed: 1-2
  • Responsible for sending welcome letters and congratulation letters to members upon renewal, new membership, or achieving PMP, CAPM, PgPM or other certifications within PMI.
  • Works with Survey Coordinator to ensure communications for new members and member renewals and supports survey needs.
